Background

May Liao and Matthieu Schmitter are Licensed Acupuncturists (L.Ac.) by the Virginia Board of Medicine and by the New York State Board for the Professions. They are also Board Certified Diplomates of Acupuncture and Chinese Herbs (Dipl.Ac.& C.H.) by the National Certification Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (NCCAOM). They hold Masters of Science Degrees (cum laude) from Pacific College of Oriental Medicine in San Diego, CA. They completed post-graduate studies at the Jiangxi Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine in Nanchang, China. There, they primarily studied under Dr, Zou Shi Yuan (OB/GYN Dept. Head) and Dr. Wu Ping Zai, Internal Medicine Specialist.

Prior to coming to Charlottesville, they maintained a private practice in New York and worked at Rehabilitation Clinics in Brooklyn in conjunction with M.D.s, D.C.s and P.T.s.

Their practice blends a foundation of Traditional Chinese Medicine with Five Element, Japanese and Taoist Acupuncture. They are presently integrating the use of Essential Oils into their practice. They have a strong commitment to ongoing study. They strive to better themselves through continuing education classes and independent study in order to broaden their perspectives and offer the best possible patient care. Currently they are receiving advanced training under Jeffrey C. Yuen.

May Liao, L.Ac., Dipl.Ac. & C.H.
May began her studies with Shiatsu training under Yoshiaki Nakano at the Ohashi Intitute in New York City. She furthered her bodywork skills, studying Tuina (Chinese Medical Massage) with Jianzhong Chen, L.Ac. and Circulatory Massage and Pediatric Tuina in San Diego. Believing in the importance of touch for healing and diagnosis, she incorporates bodywork and acupressure into her treatments. She was an assistant to Matt Callison, L.Ac. at the Pacific Center of Health in San Diego, working primarily with musculo-skeletal/sports injuries. She has studied Pa Kua under B.P. Chan and holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology from Columbia University in New York.

Matthieu Schmitter, L.Ac., Dipl.Ac. & C.H.
Matthieu, a native of France, after studying with Okuyama Shizan, became certified in Koho Igaku Shiatsu in 1987. He considers that treating with Chinese Medicine begins with the practitioner's own cultivation of Qi. He has been a dedicated Wu Ji Qi Gong and Tai Chi (Yang Style) practitioner since 1989 when he began training under Meng Fu Yuan. He also holds a second degree Black Belt in Jujitsu. Since studying with Sogyal Rinpoche in 1995, he has been practicing meditation from the Buddhist perspective. He was trained in Japanese Meridian Therapy under K.C. Conover in San Diego and was a member of the medical team at the San Diego Hospice, providing acupuncture to patients and family members.
